In this in-depth guide, we’ve listed and reviewed ten of the safest convertible car seats for 2024 to help parents pick the top-rated convertible car seats that will provide their children ultimate safety, comfort, and protection whenever they are on go.
Convertible car seats are one of the three main types of car seats available today, the other two types are infant car seats and booster seats.
Since each type of car seat is designed to fit and accommodate infants and children of different sizes, weights, heights, and ages, it can be quite expensive for parents to buy a new car seat when the time to transition from one car seat type to another arrives.
What we like about convertible car seats is that some of the models are 3-in-1 or all-in-one car seats which means they can be converted to different modes of use such as rear-facing, forward-facing, and booster seats to cater to the different developmental stages as your baby continues to grow and these features make convertible car seats to be more cost-effective over the long run.
And with all the different brands and models to choose from, any parent can have a difficult time finding a convertible car seat that will meet their child’s needs in terms of safety and comfort while still making the life of the parent easy and convenient by being easy to use, easy to clean and easy to install at the same time.
With this in mind, we have created this informative guide that includes important buying advice, safety tips, features to consider when looking to buy together with reviews of the safest convertible car seats.
Safest Convertible Car Seats 2024
1. Graco 4ever All-In-One Convertible Car Seat
Starting our list is this top-rated Graco 4ever all-in-one car seat. The Graco 4ever is a 4-in-1 convertible car seat capable of lasting up to ten years of use and it comfortably supports children from 4 – 120 pounds in weight plus it boasts of useful features that cater to both children and parents alike.
Because it’s a 4-in1 car seat it can be used as a rear-facing car seat with children from 4 – to 40 pounds, a forward-facing car seat with children from 20 to 65 pounds, a booster seat in high back belt-positioning mode with children from 30 to 100 pounds and also as a booster seat in backless belt-positioning mode with children from 40 to 120 pounds.
As a leader in the safety department, this car seat from Graco features a steel-reinforced frame for ultimate strength and durability together with EPS energy-absorbing foam for effective impact energy management.
Designed with ease of use in mind, it has a 10-position headrest to provide your growing child with the perfect fit for optimal safety and the car seat can be installed quickly and securely in place thanks to Graco’s inright latch attachment which provides for an easy and secure installation in just one second.
With the comfort of your baby and child in mind, this car seat boasts plush inserts designed to keep your baby as comfortable as possible whenever you’re on the road traveling. In addition, there is a 6-position recline that can be easily adjusted to provide a proper fit to enable your baby to grow from infancy to grade school while still traveling in comfort and style.
Parents will also be happy to know that this car seat has been designed to make the life of parents easier and more convenient. First, the car seat cover is machine-washable and very easy to remove because you don’t have to rethread the harness straps in order to remove it.
We also like the easy-to-read level indicator that helps parents find the correct position for perfect installation and optimum safety for the peace of mind they deserve. With that said, this 4-in-1 car seat from graco is a wonderful product because of the safety, comfort, and durability it provides to children and parents.
If you’re curious to know whether it has any downsides, you’ll be relieved to know there aren’t any faults we could find with this car seat. As a best-selling product in the car seat category, it’s easy to see why most parents continue to be impressed and amazed by this car seat from Graco.
2.Graco Extend2Fit Convertible Car Seat
The Graco extend2fit is an amazing convertible car seat that comes as a cheaper alternative to the Graco 4ever all-in-one that’s reviewed above.
However, unlike the Graco 4ever which can be used for rear-facing, forward-facing, and booster seat capabilities, the Graco extend2fit can only be used for rear-facing on infants from 4 – 50 pounds and for forward-facing on children from 22- 65 pounds in weight.
But one of the features that make the graco extend2fit to be 5x safer is the 3-position extension panel that provides an additional 5-inches of legroom to enable your baby to ride in the rear-facing position safely, comfortably and longer.
The 6-position recline also works in tandem with the 3-position extension panel to keep your baby safe and comfortable at the same time. This is very important considering the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children to be driven in the rear-facing position until they are at least two years old.
The process of getting your baby in and out of the car seat has also been made easier thanks to the fuss-free harness storage that holds the buckle out of the way each time you want to put the child on the car seat.
In addition, the height of the harness together with the headrest can be easily adjusted to provide your child with the best fit and comfort while still accommodating the growth of your child. Even better, you don’t need to rethread the straps in order to adjust the headrest and the harness.
The cushion and shoulder pads together with the infant insert for the head and body make this car seat super comfortable for your child. Parents also like the easy installation process that it provides to first-time users.
With that said, the Graco extend2fit is definitely a wonderful car seat for all the features you get at such an affordable price.
Even though the more expensive Graco 4ever comes with 4-in-1 capabilities, it lacks the 3-position extension panel found in the extend2fit that allows children to ride for longer and safer in the rear-facing position.
This feature makes the extend2fit to be up to 5x safer than most of the highly-priced car seats on the market today.
All in all the Graco extend2fit is a wonderful car seat that doesn’t come with any downsides you can imagine. Parents are very happy and pleased with their purchase and they say this is one of the best convertible car seats you can ever buy.

This car seat features world-class safety features that will protect your child from serious injuries in the event of a collision.
The sidewalls of this car seat are reinforced with aluminum and the head support is adjustable to 12 height settings to guarantee the perfect fit for your growing child and is also lined with thick, energy absorbing EPS foam to provide your child with superior side impact protection.
There’s also a safe stop energy absorbing harness that will provide additional protection for children who weigh between 20 to 40 pounds while seating in the forward-facing position. In order to prevent the seat from rotating during a collision, it features a unique rear-facing tether capability just for this purpose.
Additionally, this car seat can be adjusted so as to cater to the growing needs of your baby and family. In the extended rear-facing position, it can fit children from 5 – 45 pounds and in the forward-facing position, it can fit children from 20 – 65 pounds secured safely in a 5-point harness.
Even better, it can be converted into a booster seat for children weighing between 50 – 120 pounds. We are also impressed by the exceptionally slim profile that makes it possible to fit three of these car seats next to each other across the back seat of most mid-sized vehicles.
With your baby’s comfort in mind, it features expandable sides and the seat bottom has been made longer to provide better leg support and to help maintain a custom fit as your baby grows physically.
The head and body support cushions also ensure your baby is safe, snug, and positioned in the correct way always. And since this car seat can be folded flat, it will make it easy for parents to store and even carry it when on the go.
As for the downsides, we found it a bit difficult to install and this means it requires some practice in order to learn how to effectively secure this car seat in place. With that said, we can’t find any other fault with this wonderful car seat from Diono Radian RXT.
In fact, this is one of the best-selling car seats on the market right now because of the safety, comfort, flexibility, and performance it provides to children and parents alike.
4.Britax USA Marathon ClickTight Convertible Car Seat
The Britax USA marathon is another bestseller in the car seat category and it’s not difficult to see why it receives such a high rating and reception from customers.
First-time buyers will have the easiest time when it comes to installing and securing this car seat in place. For a rock-solid installation, parents simply need to open the front of the car seat, buckle the seat belt across and finally click the seat shut.
This quick and easy installation procedure is made possible by the click-tight installation system which is not only one of the safest but also one of the simplest installation technology currently on the market.
This car seat can be used as a rear-facing car seat with children from 5 – 40 pounds and also as a forward-facing car seat with children from 20 – 65 pounds. In terms of safety and protection from collisions and impact, this car seat has features that make it superior to most car seats in the same price range.
In order to protect children from dangerous side impact collisions, it has a deep foam-lined shell that helps to absorb energy from impact while still shielding your baby from the most fatal types of collisions.
In addition to this, it features a safety system known as safecell impact protection that includes a steel frame for ultimate strength and durability, an energy-absorbing base, V-shaped tether that helps to minimize rotation of the seat together with staged-release stitches whose purpose is to slow and reduce forward movement of the car seat during an impact or collision.
For the comfort of your child, it features a 12-position harness which can be easily adjusted with the simple push of a button to provide proper fit for children of different sizes and height.
There’s also a 7-position recline with automatic level indicator to enable parents adjust the car seat to the most comfortable position for the baby while still providing the best installation angle for your vehicle.
As for the downsides, few parents complain that the clicktight feature is a great concept but it still requires you to really pull the strap to get the seat tight in place. The straps together with the harness also have some few issues in terms of fit.
With that said, the britax usa marathon is still a great car seat thanks to the superior impact protection features it provides to babies and children alike. And as a top selling car seat, parents can be confident of getting the peace of mind they deserve each and every time they’re on the road travelling with their babies.
5. Britax USA Advocate ClickTight Convertible Car Seat
In terms of features, this Britax USA advocate is very similar to the Britax Marathon that’s reviewed above but the advocate comes with a few additional safety features that you can’t find in the Britax Marathon.
One distinguishing safety feature between the two models is that the Britax advocate comes with three layers of side impact protection whereas the Britax marathon has only one layer.
These three layers of side impact protection include a deep energy-absorbing shell, a foam-lined headrest together with side cushions that combine to protect and shield your baby from dangerous side-impact collisions.
The second important feature that is found in the Britax advocate but lacking in the Britax marathon is the click & safe snug harness indicator that enables parents to know whether the child’s harness is within the range of proper tightness.
In order to provide your child with the maximum fit and comfort, the headrest of the Britax advocate can be easily adjusted to 14 different positions at the push of a button and there’s also a 2-position buckle for moving the buckle outwards to enable it to cater to the growing needs of your baby.
On the other hand, the headrest of the Britax marathon can only be adjusted to 12 positions. And just like the marathon, this Britax advocate can also be used as a rear-facing car seat for children starting from 5 – 40 pounds and as a forward-facing car seat for kids starting from 20 – 65 pounds in weight.
It also boasts the safecell impact protection system that includes a V-shaped tether for minimizing seat rotation, staged-release stitches for slowing and reducing the forward movement of the car seat during collisions, an energy-absorbing base together with a steel frame that adds to the strength and durability of the car seat.
It also has the clicktight installation system for easy and quick installation of the car seat. So the Britax advocate and the Britax marathon are very similar in terms of features and appearance and in fact if we were to place them side by side, many parents would have a hard time telling the difference between these two models.
But the Britax advocate does come with a few additional safety features that also make it more expensive than the Britax marathon. So it’s up to parents to decide whether the added safety features and cost on the Britax advocate is worth it or not.
6. Peg Perego Primo Viaggio Convertible
The Peg Perego is an Italian brand that is also known for quality and safety, especially in the car seat department. With this in mind, you can rest assured of superior protection, comfort, safety, and ease of use if you decide to get the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio car seat.
It boasts the SAFE technology which is a shock-absorbing foam element device that’s located right below the shell. During an impact or collision, this SAFE device crumples so as to help reduce the stress on the child’s neck and shoulders thus keeping injuries minimal.
Your child’s neck, head, and spine will also be protected in the event of a side-impact collision thanks to the EPS and energy-absorbing foam that’s been integrated into the shell and head panel to protect your child’s head and torso from dangerous forces upon impact.
For energy management purposes, there’s a contoured steel backplate which helps to minimize flexing while still reducing the forward movement of the car seat during impact. In terms of fit and comfort, the headrest can be easily adjusted to 10 different positions to ensure your baby gets the safest fit.
Additionally, the car seat can be reclined in the rear-facing mode to provide a very relaxing position for the baby while still allowing for extra room for the growth of your baby. The installation process is also super quick and easy and the leveling line on the side of the car seat makes it even easier to get the correct angle of recline.
Also, the fabric used on this car seat is of superior quality and easy to clean. And when compared to other car seats, the Peg Perego Primo is significantly light in weight thus making it easy to carry around. This car seat can be used both as a rear-facing seat for children from 5 to 35 pounds and also as a forward-facing seat for children from 20 to 65 pounds.
The only downside to this car seat is the high price but this doesn’t seem to bother most parents because of the unmatched safety performance and superior quality you get from this car seat.
But apart from the high price which is actually worth it, we couldn’t find anything else to complain about this wonderful car seat from Peg Perego. Most of the parents say they are very happy with the safety performance they are getting from it and would purchase it over and over again.
7.Chicco Nextfit Zip
The Chicco Nextfit Zip is engineered to provide parents and children with innovative safety features and convenience whenever they are on the road.
When compared to other models, the Chicco Nextfit Zip comes with up to 9-recline position leveling which is the most recline options of any convertible car seat and this enables it to provide for an accurate fit in a wider range of vehicles.
The head rest can be adjusted to 6 different positions to help accommodate the growth of your child when used both as a rear-facing and forward-facing car seat. There are two bubble levels that indicate the correct seat angle in both rear-facing and forward-facing seating positions.
Additionally, the shoulder straps can also be adjusted by widening the positions of the harness straps to accommodate growing children alike. We like the super-easy installation process this car seat provides to parents even though we found it a bit difficult to tighten the straps.
The seat pad provides ultimate comfort for your child and it can also be completely zipped out from the shell for easy machine-washing operations. Whenever you want to convert this car seat from a rear-facing to forward-facing position, there’s an integrated slide path that will make it very easy for you to re-position the latch strap without any rethreading needed.
To make it easy for parents to put and remove the child from the car seat, it features comfortflex harness management with padding and flex-out technology that holds both sides of the waistbelt up and out of the way to allow for quick and easy loading or unloading.
In terms of safety protection, this car seat from Chicco Nextfit has been tested by the various federal safety organizations and found to be very safe for side impact protection and any other types of collisions.
It can be used on children from 5 – 40 pounds in the rear-facing mode and on children from 22 – 65 pounds in the forward-facing mode. Are there any downsides to this car seat that might make parents reconsider their decision to purchase it?
Honestly, there aren’t any issues with this car seat from Chicco Nextfit and even though it is expensive, in our opinion the high cost is well worth it. Most parents love it because it is very comfortable for children, easy to use and offers superior protection for children during impact. So this is definitely an amazing car seat that’s worth every penny.
8.Maxi-Cosi Pria 70 Convertible Car Seat
If you’re looking for a car seat that will give your family a 5-star experience in terms of safety, comfort and style, then the Maxi-Cosi Pria 70 convertible car seat would be a great choice to consider.
For multi-directional crash energy management, it comes fitted with air protect side impact protection with the safety of flextech. This is an advanced air cushion system that’s designed to provide ultimate protection to your baby’s head in a side impact collision.
Additionally, the two stages which include rear-facing for children starting from 9 – 40 pounds and forward-facing for children up to 70 pounds will also benefit from this side impact protection technology from air protect technology.
We really like the special design that allows this car seat to fit properly in your car while still creating more room for the front seat passengers to stretch out with ease. For your child’s comfort, it comes with self-wicking fabrics and premium padding to keep your child dry and comfortable at the same time.
The headrest together with the harness can be adjusted with just one hand to provide a safe and comfortable fit for your growing child. You can also recline the seat to 3 different levels to offer your baby the best sitting angle both in the rear-facing mode as well as in the forward-facing mode.
For easy and quick machine washing operations, the fabric can be removed easily with simple snaps without the need to rethread the harness and once washed it can be dried quickly in the dryer since it is dryer safe. We also like the cup holder that’s integrated firmly on the side of the car seat to prevent toddlers from pulling it off.
However the straps that come with this car seat are too short and difficult to loosen or tighten after the child is strapped in. Even worse, the straps are so thin that they tangle up and turn the buckle backwards forcing you to untangle them to use the buckles.
But this is not a common issue with most parents as it’s only something that’s been reported by few parents. All in all the Maxi-Cosi Pria 70 is a great convertible car seat that will guarantee the safety of your child whenever you’re travelling with the family.
It’s also comfortable, easy to clean and flexible enough to provide more space for other family members who are travelling together with the baby in the car.
9.Evenflo Symphony Elite All-In-One Convertible Car Seat
As a much more affordable convertible car seat on our list, the Evenflo symphony comes with helpful features that make it a great option for any parent who’s serious about the safety of their children.
Thanks to Evenflo’s exclusive auto-retracting sure latch connectors, this car seat can be installed very quickly and easily in as little as 60 seconds with no pulling required and this makes it very convenient to be moved from one vehicle to another.
Unlike some of the car seats on our list that only have one layer of side impact protection, this convertible car seat features Evenflo’s proprietary e3 side impact protection that constitutes up to three layers of superior side impact protection to significantly reduce side impact collision forces by up to 50% thus keeping your baby safe from injuries.

The headrest can be easily adjusted with just one hand plus the head and body come with removable pillows that can be inserted to provide additional support and comfort.
We also like how the car seat pad can be removed for quick machine-washing operations and the integrated cup holder that makes it easy for the baby to access drinks. As for the cons, there are only a few minor faults we could find on this car seat from Evenflo.
Few parents complain that the infant headrest doesn’t provide proper head support for the baby especially when the baby is asleep on the car seat.
And even though some parents might find it to be a little bulky when compared to other models, the kind of safety performance you get together with the ease of installation, ease of use, comfort and build quality make this car seat a great product that’s worth the price.
10.RECARO ProRIDE Convertible Car Seat
Last on our list is the Recaro ProRIDE convertible car seat that can be used either as a rear-facing car seat from 5 to 40 pounds and as a forward-facing car seat from 20 to 65 pounds.
The kind of side impact protection your child will get from this car seat is simply outstanding since it features enhanced head wings that shield your child’s head and face while the headrest helps to limit movement of the neck.
For additional safety, there are reinforcements at the sides, hips and thighs to help stabilize the pelvis and torso areas of your child during impact. Designed to provide high-performance comfort to your child, it features soft cushions made with expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) to absorb external forces when on the go.
For nap time comfort, it comes with the dual air flow comfort system that consists of built-in shell vents and coolmesh air ventilation for keeping your child cool and comfortable at the same time.
In fact, most parents say that this car seat is cooler when compared to other car seats and this is due to the built-in shell vents together with the coolmesh air ventilation.
When you want to switch from rear-facing to forward-facing position, the TrueLock belt lock-offs will make this task very easy for you while the headrest and harness can be easily adjusted for a quick and precise fit for your child without the need to rethread the straps.
When you want to put your child on the car seat, the chest-clip storage pockets will keep the harness out of the way to make this task easy for you. For even more convenience when on the go, you can use the built-in storage for the top tether and LATCH connectors to put other items when these features are not in use.
So this is also a great convertible car seat even though few parents wish it came with integrated cup holders for putting your child’s drinks in close proximity. And depending on the size of your car, the installation process can be a bit difficult, especially in the rear-facing position.
But honestly speaking, there isn’t anything else to complain about this convertible car seat from Recaro ProRIDE and it’s actually one of the safest car seats due to the kind of side impact protection it provides to children during an impact.
And even better it is slightly more affordable than most of the other convertible car seats on our list.
Convertible Car Seats Buying Guide
A car seat is one of the safest and most important products you can buy your baby soon after giving birth. Car seats are designed to protect and keep babies and children very safe while traveling in the vehicle, especially in the event of a collision.
There are different types of car seats which are infant car seats, convertible car seats, and booster seats. And each type of car seat is recommended for use on infants and children of different sizes, weights, and ages.
In this guide, we are only going to touch on convertible car seats and try to explain what features one must look out for, the important safety tips to consider, and how they are better or comparable to the other types of car seats available.
The low down on convertible car seats
Convertible car seats come in different types such as 3-in-1 or all-in-one car seats that can be changed from a rear-facing position to a forward-facing position and also into a booster seat for children who weigh up to 120 pounds.
We know most parents find it cheaper and cost economical to buy a convertible car seat right after the baby is born instead of starting with an infant car seat and then finally transitioning to the convertible seat when the baby has outgrown the infant car seat.
However, experts think that young infants are much safer in infant car seats since convertible car seats seem to overwhelm little babies when they are not yet ready to use them.
But if you’re a parent who finds it more affordable to start using a convertible car seat immediately after giving birth, then it’s wise to ensure it comes with additional padding and inserts that will help your young baby to fit properly and comfortably.
When compared to infant car seats, convertible car seats tend to be a bit bulky and they usually need to be installed in the car as opposed to being clicked into a base that stays in the car.
This makes them a bit inconvenient for taking them in and out of your car, carrying your baby in them, or even snapping them into a stroller. But with an infant car seat, you can do all the above tasks pretty easily.
For children who are under 1 year old and weigh less than 20 pounds, convertible car seats must be installed in the rear-facing position and ride in this position for as long as possible or until the rear-facing position limits the seat.
This is because experts like the American Academy of Pediatrics say that riding in the rear-facing position is the safest way of riding your baby. Only when your child is ready should you transition to a forward-facing position.
In this position, most convertible car seats can comfortably support children who weigh up to 65 pounds. Later on, when your child outgrows the convertible car seat, you can then switch to a booster seat for children who weigh up to 120 pounds.
Important features to look for in a convertible car seat
There are a number of features that parents must look for when they are looking to buy a convertible car seat and some of these features will ensure your baby is very safe, comfortable, and positioned properly while riding along. Discussed below are some of the most important features to look for:
Ease of use – a great convertible car seat must make it easy for the parent to use especially if it’s their very first time using it. The car seat must provide for easy and hassle-free installation and the instruction manual must be straightforward and very easy to understand.
It’s also important to check the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s 5-star rating since convertible car seats that receive the highest safety ratings are also usually simpler to use.
A 5-point harness – these are straps that make it easy for parents to secure the child safely and comfortably on the car seat. For safety purposes, these straps are very crucial and there’s usually one strap for each shoulder, one for each hip, and one that goes between your baby’s legs. Luckily, these straps come included with all new car seats today.
Easy adjustments – in order to accommodate the physical growth of your baby, the 5-point harness also needs to be easily adjustable. Additionally, the headrest also needs to be adjustable to different heights as your baby continues to grow.
Most convertible car seats come with these features even though the number of height adjustments for both the harness and the headrest will vary from model to model.
Side Impact Protection – this is a very important safety feature that needs to be included in all car seats. Side impact protection usually includes energy-absorbing foam, EPS together with other features that combine to provide ultimate protection in the pelvic, torso, and head areas of your baby during an impact.
Also depending on the model, some convertible car seats come with up to 3 layers of side impact protection while others have only a single layer of side impact protection.
As you might expect, the more layers of side impact protection a convertible car seat has the more protection it will provide to your baby during a collision.
LATCH (lower anchors and tethers for children) – all car seats and vehicles manufactured from 2002 to date have been designed to be compatible with the LATCH system. This system basically allows the attachment of car seats directly to a vehicle’s frame rather than using the seat belts to secure them in place.
All convertible car seats nowadays come equipped with lower anchor connectors and top tether straps but you need to check the manufacturer’s manual to know whether they don’t recommend using a top tether strap in the rear-facing position.
Comfort – a convertible car seat that is well-padded with plenty of head support and even features additional inserts for the body and head areas will provide a supportive and very comfortable ride for your child.
The angle of recline also adds to the comfort of your child and so ensure the convertible car seat can be reclined to different levels when used in the rear-facing and forward-facing positions respectively.
Ease of cleaning – the padding on the car seat should be easy to remove whenever the baby messes with it. The fabric should also be machine-washable and dryer safe to make the job of cleaning and drying quickly and thus more convenient.
Storage – most convertible car seats come with integrated cup holders at the side where parents can put drinks in close proximity to the baby.
Some come with storage departments for the harness and straps where one can put additional items especially when the straps and harness are not in use.
How to know whether the convertible car seat is installed correctly to ensure your child is safe
It might surprise you to know that most car seats ranging from infant to convertible and even booster seats are not installed correctly even by parents who have been using these car seats for a long time.
In fact, studies conducted by the NHTSA and in the field have revealed that the misuse of all car seats and seat belts varies from a staggering 74 to 90 percent. With this in mind, here’s how to ensure the car seat you’ve bought for your child is installed correctly.
Right seat – it’s very important to check the car seat’s height and weight limits as recommended by the manufacturer.
The age of your child is also important to consider since it’s reflective of his/her skeletal development and this will definitely affect how he/she fits on the car seat.
Seat tight – a car seat that is installed properly should be tight enough and it shouldn’t move side-to-side or front-to-back for more than 1 inch.
We know it can get a bit frustrating especially for first-time parents when they find it difficult to get the car seat installed tight and properly. However, don’t get discouraged and keep practicing until you learn how to fix the car seat properly.
Harness height – for rear-facing installation, the harness straps should be below or at the baby’s shoulders. For forward-facing installation, the harness straps should be above or at the toddler’s shoulders.
And for both stages of installation, the chest clip should always be positioned at the armpit level.
Harness tight – if you want to know whether your child has been secured properly, you shouldn’t be able to pinch any fabric on the straps at your child’s shoulders.
Recline right and tether tight – finally check the recline angle for rear-facing car seats to prevent the baby’s head from falling forwards and obstructing his/her breathing.
Most car seats have a level indicator that enables parents to know whether the car seat is reclined at the best and most comfortable angle for the baby.
Additionally, for car seats that have been installed in the forward-facing position with a LATCH or seat belt, it’s important to ensure the top tether has been attached and tightened to prevent forward movement which can cause a head injury.
Additional safety tips
• You should keep riding your baby in the rear-facing position until he/she is at least 2 years old.
• You should also stick with a forward-facing harness until your child has outgrown both the height and weight limits of the harness.
• Your child also needs to use a booster seat until he/she is 57 inches tall and aged between 8 to 12 years old. He/she also needs to fit the vehicle belts correctly.
• All children must ride in the back seat until they are at least 13 years old even when they are ready to use the vehicle belt alone.
• Any car seat that’s been involved in an accident or damaged in any way should be replaced immediately.
• Experts advise not to buy used car seats because they could be missing important parts, might have unseen damage that may negatively affect how the car seat functions, they may not meet current safety standards or they might have been recalled in the recent past due to faulty components or design.
For those parents who feel they need to use a secondhand car seat, they need to ensure it is less than 5 years old, it comes with all parts that function properly, and more importantly, it wasn’t involved in an accident. If you have an expired car seat, then check out this guide on what to do with your expired car seat.
What you should know before you buy
• It’s important to check the child safety section of your vehicle owner’s manual to familiarize yourself with the relevant features like seats and belts.
• It’s also important to keep track of your baby’s growth in terms of height and weight since these two together with the age of your child can help you choose the right size of the car seat and enable you to know when it’s the right time to transition from one type of car seat to another.
• The retail store from where you buy the car seat should be able to accept returned products for replacement. Additionally, the retail store should allow you to test or install the car seat in your own car to be able to pinpoint issues that can make the car seat incompatible with your own vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When should you switch to a convertible car seat?
A: When your child has exceeded the highest weight or height recommended limits of an infant car seat, that’s the best time to transition to a convertible car seat.
This is usually between the ages of 9 to 18 months. Always transition at the right time and consider that experts recommend your child to be driven rear-facing until the age of 2 years.
Q: Can I use a convertible car seat for a newborn?
A: Even though infant car seats are the best choice for a newborn, they are not the only option.
There are convertible car seats that can comfortably accommodate a baby from 5 to 40 pounds or used rear-facing and then later on converted to forward-facing position for children from 40 pounds and above.
However, it’s best to include an infant insert if your tiny baby is to get the best fit and support.
Q: Do convertible car seats have handles?
A: No. Convertible car seats are designed to stay in the car and for this reason, they don’t have or need carry handles. This means they can’t be used to carry your baby in them while moving them from place to place.
Even the most popular and best-selling convertible car seat – Graco 4ever All-in-one car seat – doesn’t have a handle for carrying your baby in the seat when moving it in and out of your vehicle.

Hello, how would you like to have a better and a safer child or upgrade to a safer product if interested please contact me back thank you for your time.
Want to make car seats safer? How about designing them so that it takes less than a 200 Lb. career construction worker, kneeling with all my weight in the seat with the cinch strap wrapped around my hand cutting off circulation, to properly affix to factory specs (not able to move in any direction >1″)? I routinely rig multi ton bundles of rebar with less effort! I am a father of three, ages ranging from 1Yr to 9 Yrs. in this time, I have had the displeasure of using a varying range of brands and types of infant, convertible, and booster style car seats. Let me tell you, EVERY SINGLE ONE FAILS IN THIS CATEGORY! It takes all of my strength and weight to properly secure the seat to the anchor points in either of our vehicles. I see this as a major engineering failure as the geometry of the strap, in conjunction with the angle of the seat when properly installed, makes it virtually impossible for an average human being to properly install. PARENTS: IN MOST MUNICIPALITIES THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WILL INSTALL YOUR CHILD SEAT FOR YOU. IF YOU ARE UNSURE, PLEASE ALLOW THEM TO DO SO! I genuinely try to not be a person who complains for the sake of complaining, but this issue seriously frustrates me. If my wife and I have to trade vehicles, or if grandparents are taking the children, I feel that I am the only one strong / heavy enough to install the seats properly and I am often at work. I simply cannot understand, with all the safety improvements made over the years and all of the engineering that must go into the design, how this issue seems to allude remedy. THIS IS AN EXTREME LIFE OR DEATH ISSUE! I hope and pray that someone hears this plea and acts upon it. I feel that most people install improperly BECAUSE THEY ARE PHYSICALLY INCAPABLE OF DOING SO! Please someone, put an engineer on it. Give them this specific task: a pulley system, or some other type of mechanical advantage; improve the geometry of the cinch strap, do something, ANYTHING! but please seriously. “According to the NTHSA: 74% – 90% of child car seats are installed improperly”. These statistics are unacceptable, and the manufacturers should be held accountable. If we had 10% of this issue with our safety gear on construction sites we would be shut down immediately by OSHA. Why is this allowed to go on when our children and their safety is involved? I feel that it borders on negligence. MAKE YOUR PRODUCTS EASIER TO USE, THEREFORE SAFER AND SAVE CHILDREN’S LIVES. It’s that simple.
The Diono Radian RXT does not allow up to 80lbs forward facing with 5 point harness. Only allows up to 65lbs. I checked all their seats and all say 65lbs.
Thanks for the correction. It was a small mistake from our writer. I’ve made the necessary changes. Thanks again Tina!
Actually, it’s recommended (AAP/NHTSA and others) to rear face up until the carseat limits are outgrown. There isn’t an age on it.
